SAFE

BY CHELSEA HICKMAN

Freshman roommates, Aubrey and Sam, meet at Brigham Young University--Aubrey, a wide-eyed Utah Mormon girl and Sam, a jaded believer with a secret. A secret she wishes would just go away.

Sandbox’s production of "Safe" is in no way a criticism of the beliefs of the LDS Church, nor a criticism of religious beliefs of any kind. Religious trauma is especially present in members of the LGBTQ community, and the mistreatment and persecution of people based on sexual orientation is a problem within many religious institutions. Neither of these things is a fault of the belief systems themselves, but rather a reflection of the remnants of institutionalized systems that historically suppressed people of diverse statuses.
